(Senior) Product Designer

The future of food production hinges on an important question: How do we feed the world’s growing population without compromising our natural resources? Both dairy and beef farmers feed our population and hold the keys to vital climate solutions. At Halter, we’re on a mission to enable farmers to run the most productive and sustainable farms. Farmers are using Halter to break free from the time-intensive constraints of conventional farming. They’re growing more grass, increasing milk production and/or helping their cattle gain more weight (for beef farming) and improving the health and well-being of their cows.

We bridge deep tech into farming. Halter enables farmers to remotely shift, virtually fence and proactively monitor their cows’ health and behaviour. Can you imagine watching 500 cows or cattle walk calmly towards the milking shed or their next break? No quad bikes, no dogs, no fences. Just a mob of cows walking at their own pace. People say it looks like magic. Our customers are revolutionising farming with Halter. It's changing lives and transforming an industry.

People join Halter because they want to do meaningful work. By joining us you’ll be solving challenging problems within a talented team and a culture built for high performance. Our team out-think, out-work and out-care. We’re committed to delivering real change in the world - this isn’t easy, and in truth, we love that it’s hard. We’re backed to deliver on a mission that matters by Tier 1 investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, DCVC, Blackbird, Promus Ventures, Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck and Icehouse ventures.

About the role

We're looking for a Mid to Senior level Product Designer who is excited about working with a talented group of people solving tough problems for the benefit of humans, animals, land, and water. The work environment at Halter allows us to move quickly, with a high degree of ownership. We often say 'Farmers come first' but we also care deeply for the health and wellbeing of our animals. Our vision for the future of dairy farming is holistic in nature, and we need your ideas to make it happen.

You'll be joining our Animal team where we focus on virtual fencing, remote shifting and automatic heat and health detections of cows and cattle. Halter combines virtual fencing for dairy cows with smart pasture management tools. What we're creating holds enormous promise to improve animal welfare and encourage more sustainable land use. But it also saves farmers several hours of work in their (very long) day, which means more time they can spend elsewhere, like with family.

To realise this vision, we need big-picture thinkers with an eye for detail who also enjoy tackling problems collaboratively. The design function at Halter works closely with Product, Engineering, CX, and customers themselves in every project we take on.

At Halter, you will experience career growth and personal development with world-class mentorship. There will be no shortage of opportunities to collaborate with and grow from spectacular people, who are as passionate about doing great work as you.

What your day could look like

  • Contribute to the end-to-end design process of new features and iterations of existing product experience
  • Deliver industry-leading, polished, delightful, and intuitive interfaces, thinking in terms of design systems, not just screens in isolation
  • Influence the direction of your product area by identifying and defining new feature opportunities and improvements
  • Collaborate closely with your PM and engineers to build high-quality solutions
  • Work through product problems from opportunity and definition to shipping features to our farmer customers
  • Participate in design critique and present work regularly to the wider team and leadership
  • Be actively involved in defining the strategy for your team’s program, as a key contributor to defining your program’s goals, success metrics, roadmap, and sprint commitments

Who we’re looking for

  • 5+ years of relevant product experience designing digital apps and systems at a tech or software company or other consumer-facing digital product team.
  • A driven self-starter, experienced in taking ownership of the direction of projects.
  • Creative problem-solver who cares deeply about doing great work and with a track record of innovating on new features from initial concepts through to beautiful high-fidelity designs.
  • Able to prototype, gain feedback and insights and then iterate quickly using tools like Figma, Adobe Creative Suite (or whatever you need to get the job done)
  • Clearly communicate design work with solid rationale informed by research and data
  • Possess a strong understanding of the product development process, from discovery and problem definition to detailed UX and visual design
  • Able to work as a core member within a multi-disciplinary team and collaborate throughout the project lifecycle to produce outstanding results
  • Ability to adhere and contribute to our in-house design system (Daisy), utilising and expanding our component library and evolving the holistic design language for both mobile and web applications.
  • Approach problems with curiosity, and excitement to learn and grow your knowledge
  • Have a ‘How can we’ mindset and you'll thrive on hard problems and can adapt quickly to shifting priorities and varying volumes of work.
  • View feedback as a gift and are focused on the best outcome rather than your own ego and you positively impact the team around you.

Halter is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace — a place where we can each be ourselves and do the best work of our lives. Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and under-represented groups of candidates tend to only apply when they meet every requirement. If you think you have what it takes but don’t necessarily tick every requirement on this job description, please still get in touch and apply to Halter. We’d love to chat to see if you’ll be an epic fit!

Our Office First Approach (For Auckland Offices)

We do have flexible working hours and you can work from home when you need to but we encourage our team to be in the office as much as you can.

We have an office-first approach because we would like to keep the opportunity for teams to have spontaneous interactions which in turn has allowed our team at Halter to foster strong relationships. Stronger relationships make it easier to disagree, give feedback, do meaningful work and as a result, be higher performing as a team.

This is applicable mainly for our Auckland office-based roles rather than on-the-road roles in teams such as Customer Success or Business Development teams.
